For one of our homeschooling field trips this spring we were able to attend the Veterinarian Day in Athens put on by the College of Veterinary Medicine at UGA. We were able to go with the Hanifords, our favorite homeschooling family. 😉 Everything was free and they had jars everywhere to donate money for the cost of the test that the graduates take which is quite expensive. I can’t remember the cost, but remember thinking it would definitely take some saving. They had some really great activities. We stood in line for an hour to do the Teddy Bear Surgery. I didn’t know if is was going to be a waste of our time and if the wait would be worth it. I was pleasantly surprised. At each station the students took a lot of time to teach and help the kids have hands on with what surgery might be like, without the scariness of it all. Although, Tommy had gone in for his vaccinations a couple of weeks before and when they brought out the shots for the teddy bears, Tommy misunderstood and thought he was getting shots and started crying. I know. My heart breaks every time I take my kids to get their vaccinations.
The first station was pre-op. They took the teddy bears’ temperature, listened to their heart beat, gave them shots, etc.
I had no idea that Taivan would get into this like he did. He loved the hands-on and seemed to love everything about it. I expected him to cry and just want me. I was so happy that he was having fun.
Okay. So the next picture is of Taivan’s new bad habit. He is a nail biter. I am to blame. I’m sure it started because I took too long to clip his nails. Oh dear. There are worse things, I guess.
Taivan and Lucy all decked out in their operating garb. They ran out of masks right before we had our turn.

They also had a fun face painting station. Another thing I was surprised about was how still Taivan sat while they painted the little dog on his face.
Tommy got a red horse.
Lucy was a blue butterfly. Shortly after she was painted I had to remove the paint. I think Lucy was allergic to it and it was really bothering her. Thankfully I had tissues and water.
Jenny wanted a cute little dog, too.
All the cute kiddos who got their faces painted. Matthew was not super excited about the whole day. He was a good sport though.
We were able to see a lot of fun animals, almost like the zoo. We saw a zebra, two different kinds of camels, llamas, goats, and of course cows and horses. Taivan got super excited about this part and has begging me ever since to go to the zoo. Here he is telling me about how they are feeding the baby goat.
They also did an ultrasound demonstration and again, Taivan wanted to be all about it. He volunteered to have an ultrasound of his arm. It was such a fun day!
