A little science mixed with sickness and other forms of education

Since my last post, two of my kids have been diagnosed with pneumonia. Walking pneumonia or atypical pneumonia, thankfully. I had heard of it before Monday when I took Matthew in to the doctor. You know that when it has been a week and your son is sounding, looking and obviously feeling worse, you should do something about it besides home remedies. I had no idea that it would be pneumonia and I tried not to give myself a guilt trip. I was just grateful that I had taken him to get the antibiotics and steroids that have helped him so much in the last few days. And when the doctor called last night to tell me that his test for mycoplasm (the bacteria that causes walking pneumonia) had come back positive and that I should consider getting any others with a cough in our family looked at, I didn’t hesitate to take the girls in. Lucy seems fine (the reason it is called walking pneumonia) but her lungs sound just as crackly as Matthews. So she is also on an antibiotic now. And my gratitude and interest in how antibiotics were discovered and cultured was piqued. As was my interest in mycoplasm pneumonia. And so I very easily researched both of these things on the Internet. Amazing and wonderful that I can, with just a few taps and a quick read, learn about these things.

I also learned that I can trust my own judgement as a mother. I may not know as much as a doctor about the illnesses my kids have, but I know my kids better than a doctor and I know when it is time to stop being their only doctor.

I love being a mother and I love learning. And I love that learning can help be a better mother and that being a mother can help me be a better learner.

This week Tom, Matthew, Jenny and I started a class on EdX called Introduction to Music Theory through the Berklee College of Music. It is so fun! And it is free! If you are wanting to learn for fun and for free, this is such a great resource! Last year I took a nutrition class from a university in the Netherlands. And it was so insightful. How to cut through the nutrition fads that are out there, plus basic nutrition information. EdX offers so many classes in so many different areas. Check it out.

Looks like there is more learning that needs to take place at our house. 🙂 Thankfully making mistakes is part of the process of learning. Appels are yumy. That is so very true. At least in my opinion and Lucy’s.
