I guess now that school started almost two weeks ago for my kids, summer is officially over. We did have a good time together. Lucy had a hard time the first couple of days the older kids were in school. She would call their names and then go running through the house to find them, only to realize that they were at school. The second day this happened she struck up a little conversation with me that blew my mind. It went like this.
L – A kids go bye-bye, Mommy?
Me – Yeah, they went to school, but they will be home in a few hours.
Lucy gets a far-away look on her face and then after a minute says,”A miss Ginger, Mommy.”
From all I can figure, Lucy was remembering what she did last school year when the kids were gone. She would play with Ginger. And now school was back in session and Ginger wasn’t here anymore. I have to say, it did make me a little sad.
And I know she misses having so many people to read books to her. It is getting a little hard to have her sit on my lap these days. It is a good thing Lucy is pretty happy to just sit next to me because in the next few months I have a feeling my lap is going to disappear for a while.
This was about a month ago or more when we thinned the carrot patch. The kids were pretty proud of the meager little carrots. I can’t wait to see their reaction when we harvest our carrots for real.
And a while back, as Lucy was starting to really exert her independence, we decided it was a good time to transition to a bigger bed. With the other kids we just moved the crib mattress onto the floor, but for some reason Lucy could not handle being out of her bed comfort zone, so we opted to just take the side off the crib and make it a day bed. She felt much better about this set-up and has loved being able to get in and out when she wants. I have to make sure and shut the closet door where all the toys are located so she doesn’t play away her naptime. She has figured out how to unload her dresser drawers and try on a few items of clothing over what she is currently wearing, so sometimes I find her taking her nap like this—here she has an extra shirt around her in a funny way and also wearing the skirt that goes over Jenny’s swimming suit.
She loves to get dressed and try on everything. Including Uncle Casey’s sunglasses (see picture below). Today before church while I was getting ready, she took her shoes and socks off. So I told her to go get them so we could put them back on. She found them and put them on all by herself, socks and everything. And I haven’t mentioned that there are shoes scattered all over the house. She likes to try on everyone’s shoes, mostly Jenny’s because they are close enough to her size so that she can walk in them, but big enough that she can easily get her feet in them. I will have to get a picture. It should be pretty easy to catch because it is happening all the time. Oh, and she loves when I am matching socks in the laundry. She just takes any two random socks and tries them on and has to go show Daddy or just admires herself with socks that go clear up to her waist.
She is loving singing at the top of her lungs. The other day in the Walmart she was singing “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” and “The Wheels on the Bus” at the top of her lungs. I am sure everyone in the store heard her sweet little songs. She has recently mastered the ABC song and celebrates and after she sings the song through she congratulates herself and claps and says “Yay! Good job, Lucy!” She must have learned to love the praise she gets from singing a song. Here is a song that turned into a chant the more she got into it. This is about the sixth or seventh time she was “singing” it for us.
And something I just want to remember. Others may also find this pretty cute. I found some Elmo slippers in Lucy’s size recently and since Ginger chewed up Lucy’s others slippers, I bought them and they have been a favorite. Lucy will be wearing them on her feet and fold in half standing up to give Elmo a hug. She wore them to bed one of the first nights she had them and this is what we found later. She is loving her slipper like it is a stuffed animal.
We have also been priming Lucy for potty training with a little video that we have used for the other two kids. Tom took a picture of her very concentrated on the content. She likes to site on her potty and I think she has all the concepts mastered except the most important one–knowing that she is about to go potty in her diaper.
And the other day when I was doing the dishes or something, I noticed that I couldn’t hear Lucy. Can be a bad sign, as I’m sure many of you can attest. So I went looking for her and found this. She had climbed up into Jenny’s bed and was snuggling with Jenny’s prized Tigger blanket. I guess she is a blankie girl like her sister. As long as she doesn’t start liking Tigger more than her own blanket.
And last, she has starting figuring out how to use stools, chairs, etc. to get what she wants. She likes to take our steppy stool up to a door that is closed to be able to turn the knob. And in the picture below she used a little stool to get into my purse and get my camera. So I had to take a picture of her. You can see the stool in the corner of the picture.
She is a very curious, and mischievous girl. But so very sweet. I love that I get to spend all day with her. She loves to get out of the house and run errands or go grocery shopping. One of her common sayings is, “A go a library today, Momma?” We can’t wait for story time to start this week! And another is “A go a park?” or “A go see Landon?” Landon is Lucy’s second cousin about her age that lives just down the street. So far we haven’t had cabin fever and hopefully it keeps up as winter will be here before we know it!
