I can’t believe it was eight years ago she came into our family. We had waited a while for her to join our family. So when she arrived, we were beyond thrilled. One of the things I always tell her is that unlike many stories you hear of babies that start crying when they are first born and start breathing, she just started breathing and looking around. I think she was so excited and so ready to try out this mortal realm. And she still is.
Her name means “bringer of light.” She has always been a bright light to everyone around her. She is happy, smiling, and makes friends so easily. She is also very full of a very lively energy. She is always finding fun in her imagination and drawing her younger brothers into it.
She is quick. She was a very fast talker. She mouthed what we were saying to her when she was three months and she said her first word at six months. I feel privileged to be her teacher and see her grasp new concepts. Her favorite subject is math, with science in a close second. She also loves reading. Her new favorite is the Harry Potter series, which she recently started reading. Her old favorites are Shel Silverstein and anything poetry. We are often talking about some random topic and Lucy will say, “I memorized a poem about that,” and she will commence to recite the poem. Just today she told me that she opened up our Shakespeare collection and began reading A Midsummer Nights Dream. She knows right where the children’s poetry section is at both of the libraries we go to and I’m really not sure how many poems she has memorized in that head of hers, let alone the poems she has already written and will write in the future. She says she wants to be a writer when she grows up and I think that she already is.
She is kind-hearted and doesn’t ever like anyone to be sad. She is the first to bring a favorite blanket, hug, or even to cry along with someone if they are sad.
She is easy to please. She asked for four things for her birthday this year: a horse stuffed animal or small horse, a jar of pickles, a bag of potatoes, and her own gallon of milk.
She loves expressing herself through art. She is constantly drawing or coloring or painting or making something creative.
She loves the seasons and loves being outside in every kind of weather. She easily finds the beauty around her and is constantly reminding me to be grateful for the simple things in life. Yesterday when we went for a walk, she was commenting on the brilliant blue sky, the leaves changing colors, the squirrels gathering their nuts for the winter, and how she is so happy to live in this beautiful place.
She love animals, especially our pets. If she could do everything for both our pets, she would. She often fills in for Matthew and Jenny in feeding either the cat or the dog. If she were big enough and strong enough to take Millie on walks, I know she would do that too. If you asked her what her favorite animal is, she would tell you a horse. She is disappointed that she can’t get a horse for her birthday or Christmas. But we are going to give her riding lessons. She definitely reveres living things. She has a hard time killing ants or trees.
She loves many things, especially good food. She only decided a couple of days ago, after much, much, much deliberation and guidance, what to have for her birthday dinner. She is constantly telling me how much she loves the food I cook for her, but I make her life difficult around her birthday because she can’t decide what to choose for her special dinner. There are worse difficulties.:)
This year is a very special year for Lucinda because she is old enough to decide to be baptized and confirmed a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She is very excited and has been looking forward to this day for years. For anyone who would like to join us, Lucy will be baptized Saturday, November 12, 2016. Contact me if you need more details.
We sure love our Lucy!
